Etchings

(2002) Paper, aquatint, etching on zinc plate

The drawings were made using multiple harmonic movements from interconnected pendulums. The combination of moving the drawing surface independently from a separate moving pen or etching needle on the surface, produces an infinite array of marks. By interacting with these self-built contraptions, the artist is able to build up a constellation of patterns on the surface as well as allowing the coincidental to happen. The balance between the control of the mechanism, and allowing mistakes to happen, results in an image that embodies both random chaos and universal order.
